    DIY Faux Gemstone Geode Jewelry

Here’s what we will be creating out of salt, ink, crayons and glue!

Greeting my crafty friends! Today we will be making faux gemstones out of epsom salts, hot glue, ink and crayons! Here’s what you will need to make these.

    SUPPLIES

    Hot glue gun

    Glue sticks

    Alcohol ink or food coloring

    Crayons

    Wire

    Exacto Knife

Clear nail polish or spray sealer

    Parchment paper

    Pliers

    Craft wire

    Scissors

    Metallic eyeshadow (optional)

Jewelry findings such as jump rings, chains or a bead necklace

Here are two projects to get you started. We will be making the crystal pointers tomorrow on Mass Appeal.

    PROJECT 1 Crystal Pointer

Pour epsom salts in sandwich bags.
Add alcohol ink or food coloring.
Shake bags to even out color.
Pour salt onto parchment paper & make a little hole at the top.
Put in hot glue in your shape of choice.
Lightly push the salt toward the glue on the sides.
Cover the top with a little salt and allow to cool.
Remove the clump and add more glue. REPEAT THE STEPS to make bigger.
Change the salt color with each layer to add dimension.
I used 3 colors on this one.
Use a craft knife to cut into the rock.
Use a lighter to heat the rock all over. This will smooth the edges and melt the salt.
Add glitter, eyeshadow or pearl powder to make it sparkle.
Take craft wire and twist into a 6″ long stick.
Bend the wire into a hook with one end longer. Cut to about 2-4″.
Take a lighter and hold the wire with the pliers. Heat the wire.
Push the wire into the rock. It should go in easy as it will melt the glue.
Heat the other side and push down.
Add glitter, eyeshadow or pearl powder if desired.
Pearl or metallic powder looks more realistic than glitter.
Cover entire rock with clear nail polish or spray sealer.
To add decoration, curl more wire with pliers.
Wrap the wire around the bail and down the stone.
Kink the wire as shown to tighten.
Thread on to a bead strand or add a chain.

PROJECT 2 Faux Metal with Faux Geodes & Drusy Quartz Stones

On parchment paper, cut 3 colors of crayons.
Sprinkle epsom salts and top with crayons.
    Drizzle hot glue on top.
Cover mixture with parchment paper and iron flat until melted.
    Allow to cool and remove.
    Trace pattern.
    Cut
This is for the metal pendant below.
Paint edges and burn with lighter quickly, so it doesn’t melt, just enough to bubble the paint!
    Trace paper pattern on cardboard.
    Cut
Make textured edge with hot glue in layers.
Add bezel once the 2 layers are cool.
Cut aluminum foil and place face down.
Use your finger to push the foil into the pattern.
    It should look like this.
With a DRY brush, lightly brush on black paint.
With your finger or a towel, wipe off most of the paint.
You can add more colors if you wish.
You can add metallic paint also.
This gives it an old “pirate treasure” look.
Add the faux gemstone you make earlier.
Seal the faux gem with nail polish. When it’s dry, spray both sides with clear coat.
This one is a mix of both techniques. I made this one to look like a geode slice.
Here are a few we made as examples. You can add jump rings, glue on bails, etc.
Everything here was made with the techniques shown above.

That’s it! Obviously, you can get really good at this and make fantastic pieces of art with this technique. As I working Momma, I’ve only got about an hour to invest while watching the latest Disney movie…then it’s back to shipping packages. So, the samples are what you can expect for an hour or two of effort. I will show you how to make everything in more detail tomorrow. I look forward to it. Let me know if you have any questions. Text or email if you need anything. The # at the studio is 413-512-3714 or [email protected].

    Stay sparkly!
