It will shortly be time for my favorite holiday, Mother’s Day. For me, every day is Mother’s Day. As a Mom, I find great joy in taking care of my family. Even the most mundane chore is rewarding when you are doing it for your children. On Mass Appeal today, we will be making photo candles and art candles by printing or drawing on tissue paper, then adhering it to a candle with wax paper and a hair dryer. I have made some cute graphics for you to download. Feel free to stop by the store if you need old costume jewelry or findings for craft projects. OBVIOUSLY I won’t charge you much and you can get what you need for your DIY projects.
This DIY project is super easy and you only need a couple of supplies. The first thing you need to do is find an image. I used my daughter’s old paperback books and some old greeting cards. You can download a lot of fun graphics from places like Glitter-Graphics and The Graphics Fairy. They have thousands of images to choose from. I have uploaded a few vintage graphics for you here just to get you started.
Supplies:
- Candle
- Tracing Paper
- Heat Tool or Hair Dryer
- Wax paper
There are two ways of doing this craft.
- Cut a piece of gift tissue paper a tiny bit bigger than 8×11 and tape all four sides to a regular piece of typing paper. Place it in your printer and print your image. Trim your image leaving as little border as possible and the place it INK SIDE OUT on your candle.
- Take a cut graphic, a photo, or let your kids color with markers on the gift tissue. Then follow the instructions below.
Wrap a piece of wax paper tightly around your candle, holding both ends in one hand on the back side (you might want to use a hot pad for this part!) For the next step you can use an embossing gun, hairdryer or even your stove. Holding your candle with your hands away from the heat slowly heat until you see the wax paper start to melt and you see the ink come through the paper. Watch the video for more pointers.
At that point, you’re done. Carefully peel the wax paper away and reveal your printed candle. If you are using card stock or postcards, you might need two coats of wax paper to adhere the edges.
