DIY Celtic Inspired Jewelry

Greetings neighbors! To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we will be making jewelry using EVA foam sheets. These are super cheap and can be purchased at the dollar store or any discount store. Here’s what you will need to make this craft:

SUPPLIES

Eva craft foam sheets (Walmart $8 for a jumbo pack or .50 each)
Exacto knife
Acrylic metallic paint (not fabric paint)
Metallic powdered eye shadow or pigment powder
Mod Podge
Template designs and patterns (bottom of the page)
Paper
Printer
Sharpie marker
Flat iron or regular iron
Odds and ends to make imprints such as screws, bottle caps, belt buckles, kitchen utensils (anything to make a pattern)
Jewelry findings such as clasps, cord, ribbon or embroidery thread.

Step 1

Print the pattern of your choice or draw a design with a sharpie marker.

Step 2

Tape the pattern over the foam. Use the exacto knife to lightly cut the paper design into the foam. Be careful to not cut all the way through. Remove the paper as shown.

Step 3

Cut the foam again with the exacto blade to make the pattern more pronounced.

Step 4

Use a flat iron to firm up the foam. Once you see the foam puff up or start to curl, it’s ready to be removed. Flatten the design, or curve the design into a cuff as you wish.

Step 5

Cut the bracelet as you choose .

Step 6

Paint the bracelet with regular acrylic paint on one side and allow to dry for at least an hour. Repeat on the other side.
Step 7

Rub on some metallic eye shadow or pigment powder onto the bracelet. For a burnished look, use 3 colors.

Step 8

Paint lightly with Mod Podge to seal the bracelet. Allow it to dry on each side for at least an hour. It should be dry, not tacky. I put my samples on a plate and placed them on the radiator for an hour.

Step 9

With a pin or an exacto knife, cut a tiny hole in the middle of the end. Then thread through some embroidery thread and knot it. This makes a great, adjustable clasp.

This technique is the same for all the items. Here are the photos of the collars and pendants I made.

Cut THIS template to make a collar.
  • Iron the collar, then push in texture. I used a belt buckle.
  • Paint with 2 colors, yellow and brown. Allow to dry for at least an hour.
  • Paint on Mod Podge on one side.
  • Dab on metallic powder while the mod podge is still wet.
  • Blend the powder from the top to the bottom in smooth strokes. Wet your brush if need be.
  • Allow to dry for at least an hour until it’s no longer tacky.
  • Once dry, use a hot flat iron and slowly push through the collar. It will get puffy.
  • As it puffs up, shape it with your hands, rounding as you go.
  • Slightly bend the top edges to fit a round neck.
  • The top should be slightly bent as shown.
  • The paint will heat and burn to look like this.
  • Here is the finished collar.
  • I used these pendants to stamp in a pattern. Anything with a pattern will work. Just heat the foam and press on anything with a raised pattern such as a china plate, a pendant, a belt buckle, a leather print handbag, crumpled aluminum foil, etc.
  • I put these on a cord necklace.
TEMPLATES

Ok friends, it’s that easy. These ideas are make to be cheap, quick and fun. You can easily make these in the time it takes to watch a movie. The young adults love cosplay. Here’s an old modeling pic of a younger me wearing an arm band made from EVA foam and wire. Once a nerd, always a nerd. 🙂

My daughter loves anime and super heroes. You will be the “cool Mom” with this craft! Let me know how it goes. And as always, DIY supply boxes are free for Mass Appeal viewers. Everyone else has to pay a whopping $10 for shipping and handling…yeah, I’m working on my first million. So, text or email me with any questions you have and I will see you all in the morning. Guess I will have to put on real clothes and makeup and look like a woman instead of a beggar. Well, my husband will be happy. Poor guy!

Big hugs!
