I worked in the fashion industry for over 30 years. I started modeling professionally at a young age. Today on Mass Appeal we will be showing you how to make many different looks with only a few items. In addition to how to dress, the best fashion tips I can give you go beyond clothing.
-
Wear what you feel comfortable in.
You will perform better in school and at work if you feel comfortable. Obviously this doesn’t mean going to school/work in your pajamas, but wear something that makes you smile and isn’t physically painful.
-
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
People will judge you by your appearance. You have to have your own style but you can incorporate that style into a successful look. To move up the corporate ladder, dress like you can handle some responsibility. Often, the best dressed person gets the job, especially if both candidates have similar qualifications. For example, If you are a goth at heart, wear punky earrings. Then get crazy on the weekends with your blue hair and black lipstick. This idea also works for school. When I was a kid I was a little goth rebel at heart. I noticed how differently the teachers treated me when I dressed for success and left off the black lipstick and heavy purple eyeshadow. Moderation is the key! Is it wrong that people judge you? YES! But sadly our civilization has not yet evolved to a Utopia with non judgement. Hopefully, our kids will actualize that philosophy here on earth soon!

The only person’s fashion opinion that matters is your own.
This may seem a contradiction to the tip #2 but it’s not. In my humble opinion, fitting in to get friends is a waste of time. People worth having as friends won’t judge you by your appearance anyway. You have to adhere to societies rules to be successful, but you can still be your own person. Trying to please others to get friends will make you appear weak and people will learn they can take advantage of you. Dance to your own music. Even if people don’t agree with you, they will respect you, and that is the most important thing in the world.

Buy clothes that fit you.
Yes, that includes us plus sized girls. Since I have been overweight, I’ve worn big baggy clothes to cover my chubbies. My husband and daughter have taught me moo-moos only make you look bigger. You aren’t fooling anyone by wearing a tent. By wearing tailored, well fitted clothing, you will look your best. It’s well worth it to get your clothing fitted if need be. These days, size is not a big deal. If you are confident in your own skin, you can wear anything. Soon I will be doing a segment on “Dressing for all sizes” and I will show you how to minimize and maximize the areas that need it.
Remember…
People take their cues from YOU on how you want to be treated. Treat yourself with love and kindness. When other people treat you otherwise, tell them, “Thank you for establishing your lack of character.” and ignore them from then on. Surround yourself with positive people and uplifting things and success will follow.
Now, onward to the fashion lesson! See you soon!
